Important Update for Dual Nationals: UK Travel Changes Coming in 2026

Are you a dual national? If so, this is an essential travel update you won’t want to miss. A dual national holds citizenship in more than one country, and each country has its own rules for entering and leaving. Starting 25 February 2026, the United Kingdom is introducing new rules that could affect dual British citizens.

Here’s what you need to know:

Do Dual British Citizens Need an ETA?

If you hold British or Irish citizenship, you’re exempt from needing an ETA. However, there’s a crucial requirement:

  • You must have a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement when travelling to the UK.

  • From 25 February 2026, dual British citizens without a valid passport or certificate will face additional identity checks and cannot go through UK passport control until your British nationality is confirmed.

Tip: Renew your British passport well before travelling. Check the latest information and renew your passport on GOV.UK.

Why This Matters

Travel rules for dual nationals vary around the world:

  • United States: U.S. citizens must enter and exit using a U.S. passport. Expired passports mean no entry under ESTA.

  • Canada: Dual citizens must use a valid Canadian passport; an ETA alone won’t suffice.

  • South Africa: You must enter and leave on a South African passport, or risk fines, delays, or denied entry.

Always carry both passports when travelling. Airlines usually check the passport that allows entry into your destination, so having both on hand makes check-in smoother.

Extra Tips for Stress-Free Travel

  • Make sure both passports are valid with enough blank pages.

  • Review visa requirements based on which passport you’re using, including for transit.

  • When in doubt, contact the consulate of the countries you are visiting or transiting for accurate guidance.
